The Mountain Between Us is directed by Hany Abu-Assad. Abu-Assad has received two Academy Award nominations: in 2006 for his film Paradise Now, and again in 2013, at the 86th Awards, for his film Omar.  The Mountain Between us is adapted from the book written by Charles Martin. This movie features Idris Alba and Kate Winslet as well some screen time with Beau Bridges and Dermot Mulroney.

Two strangers, a surgeon going home for a important surgery and a photographer on the way to her own wedding crash in a single engine plane and they are left to fight the elements together along with an unnamed dog.  I liked Kate Winslet and Idris Alba on screen together. I believed the friendship then the unlikely romance that developed between them. It's said that when you're in a near death situation with someone a bond forms and that's exactly what we are seeing on screen.

I hadn't read the book in advance so I found that the movie was a bit more romantic than I expected. Once I became open to the fact that it was a romance just as much as a survival story, I was vested in the relationship between Winslet's and Alba's characters. At times, some of the relationship stuff was sort of generic with a slight cheese factor but I didn't mind it.

Overall The Mountain Between Us was a charming film. It was truly cinematically beautiful. The mountains, the snow, the vastness of the wilderness. Even when there wasn’t much “action”, it was suspenseful and tense at times.  If you haven't read the book then I'm not going to spoil it for you by telling you if they survive or not, so you should see the movie and find out.

If this movie is even half as good as the book I’ve got to read it! The book has gotten rave reviews, with an average Goodreads rating of 4.18 with almost 13k reviews. If you enjoy survival books and are open to a little romance, then you'll likely want to read it even after watching the movie.  If you've read the book, please let me know what you thought of it. If you wrote a book review, feel free to link up your review in the comments.

Go out and see The Mountain Between Us this weekend. It's a solid movie option and is worth the time spent.
