About The Girlfriends Literary Group

**************The Basics*******************

Sadly in 2019 my original book club was placed on hiatus. I was inspired to create something new and improved. Re-launching January 2023, the book cub has been revamped and renamed Sistas That Read Fiction.

The meetings are held bi-monthly on the 1st Sunday of every month (If it’s a holiday weekend, we’ll meet the 2nd Sunday) at 6pm. So we will meet January, March, May, June, August, Oct, December.

**************The History *******************

Est. March 2011. This is a ladies only adult book club. We are a small group of ecstatic foodie book lovers that enjoy reading and discussing fiction books. We are a diverse, professional, fun, group of women that enjoy reading and socializing. Our ages range from 30-60ish.

We are open to exploring new/different authors and genres. We are able to read books that may not be our own selection and meet faithfully once a month to discuss the selected book. We hold our book club meetings at restaurants all over the Oakland County (mostly) area.

The meetings are held monthly on the 1st Sunday of every month (If it’s a holiday weekend, we’ll meet the 2nd Sunday) at 6pm.

Our meeting day and time remain the same so everyone knows when book club is!

**************The Details******************

This club is for readers who can both contribute and participate. If you are a sporadic reader or have a very busy schedule and it’s hard to free up one evening a month, then the group may not be a good fit for your schedule.

This group reads FICTION only. There are no limitations on what genres we may read. AA Literature, Urban Fantasy, Suspense, Romance, Horror, YA Fiction, General Fiction, etc., we're open trying out all genres. Since we're all adults, we may read some books with adult themes.

We hold our Book Review meetings once a month at different restaurants.  This is an awesome opportunity for us to check out restaurants and other establishments that interest us. Most of the book review meetings will be in Oakland County. Rochester Hills, Troy, Auburn Hills, Royal Oak, Birmingham, West Bloomfield, etc.

Book and restaurant suggestions are accepted from members twice a year. A voting poll is held at that time compiled of the member suggestions. We vote on books and meeting locations in 6 month increments. To remain an active member of this group, you must attend a minimum of 6 book club meetings per calendar year.

In addition to a mutual love of reading, this group is also about creating and growing friendships. We also schedule some social events so that we can get together and hang out. The social events events are always optional and do not count toward the 6 required Book Review meetings per year.

If you love to read and are open to making new friends, join us! We'd love to have you!

Happy Reading,
Tamara, Founder & Organizer of The Girlfriends Literary Group

FAQ

Is this an on-line book club? No. This is a real life book club. We meet once a month.  Because we mostly meet at restaurants all over the Oakland County area, it's best that you live within driving distance so that you can participate.

How do I join? Contact me about your interest and why you'd like to join. You'll be invited to a few meetings and you'll be able to gauge if we're a good fit for you and vice versa. After that, you'll gain access to our private group on Goodreads.com.

You'll need to have an account on Goodreads.com to be invited. This site is 100% FREE, it's easy to sign up. If you don't have a account yet, sign up and get familiar with the site. It's a book lover's dream! :-)

What's on the Goodreads.com group page?  You'll see and be able to RVSP to meetings, see what books are upcoming, suggest and vote on what we read and what restaurants we meet at! You'll also be able to chat with other GLG members about books, play message board games and other random stuff! I also send out important update emails to everyone through the group page.

When do you meet?  We meet in the 1st Sunday of every month at 6pm. If there is a holiday on that weekend, we'll meet on the 2nd Sunday.

Where do you meet?  We mostly restaurants at in Troy, Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, etc.  We go to other cities of course, but those have been the trend thus far.

Does this book club have rules?  Yes we do!

In summary, these basic rules provide the vibe of our group:

1. Our group is based on courtesy, kindness and friendship and we act in that spirit. Be respectful of others time as we are of yours. No shows are not tolerated. 3 no shows and you’re out. Period.

2. We all understand having many responsibilities (family, work, etc). For that reason, we only require everyone to participate in, at the very least, 6 book reviews per year. If you don't plan to be an active member of the group please don't join as this makes it difficult for members to get to know you. (Kids are NOT allowed at the meetings)

3. Have fun!
