Answer: I have two picks. Both of these books I read after hearing a ton about them and I really enjoyed them both. The Hunger Games, obviously! In my opinion, the first book was the best of the three. The Night Circus, which was really good. It was a little odd to read at first, but once you got into the flow of things, it was worth it. I can see this book as an amazing movie if done right. | 18 & Over Book Blogger Follow is a weekly feature that begins on Fridays and runs through the weekend, hosted by Crystal from Reading Between the Wines. This is a Friday blog hop with the objective to find and visit other book blogs that share the same interest as you, namely books geared towards the 18 & over crowd, and make some new friends! Feel free to follow Shelf Addiction via NetworkedBlogs, Linky or Email subscription. If you are new to Shelf Addiction, please leave a comment below with how you're following and I will make sure to visit & follow your blog back. :-) Question: What book are you currently in the middle of? Not 'just finished', I want to hear about what you're currently deep into and your thoughts on it right now. Loving it, not so much, or mixed feelings, maybe? Get it all out, sometimes how we feel about a book in the middle is totally different then how we feel at the end. It will be interesting to hear about it now and then go back to check out everyone's reviews later! Answer: I'm currently in the middle of Boyfriend from Hell, by Jamie Quaid. At this very moment, I'm sort of not sure if I like the book or not. It's taking too long to get to the meat of the story. I'm holding off judgement because even though it's starting slow, I see the potential and I'm hoping the story will be great once it gets moving. |

A few weeks ago I came across a blog post (sorry, I can recall whose it was) which talked about the self-inflicted stresses we put on ourselves as book bloggers. After reading the post, it made me think about how stressed out I made myself when I don't finish a book. I literally felt guilty when I didn't complete a book. Since I started my blog back in January, I have often felt pressure (self imposed) to complete books that I found painful to read. I felt as though if I start it, I have to finish it. So I would force myself to finish books that I did not enjoy. I'd say in the last month or so, my thought process on this subject has completely changed.
I have always read for the fun of it and because I love books. Period. Just because I now have a blog doesn't mean that my motives for reading have changed. Thus I have re-instated my previously abandoned 50 page rule. If I'm 50 pages in and I don't like the book in any way, shape or form it's going onto my DNF (did not finish) pile! Not only will it go onto the DNF pile, it will go there and I won't feel one ounce of guilt about it! :-) I've come to the conclusion that if I force myself to read books I don't enjoy, this blog will start to feel more like a job rather than an enjoyable hobby. And that my friends, is not what I'm looking to do! Don't get me wrong, I will not write a review on a book that I haven't finished. I don't think that's fair, but you may see some comments here and there on my Goodreads status updates as I read those first 50 pages. ;-) Bloggers and readers, what do you say? Do you complete every book that you start reading? If not, what's your method to decide if a book should be placed on the DNF pile? “Book Haul Tuesday” is my weekly post where I take a peek at the newly released fiction books of the week and post the books which I’ve added to my forever growing “To Be Read” list. I hope to introduce you to some interesting books and talented authors that you haven't read yet. Hopefully I'll motivate you to run out and pick up a new release or two for your shelf or reader! At the beginning of every month this post will include the list of books up next for review. I'll also post books that I've received and/or purchased from various sources. What new release will you be buying for you illustrious bookshelf or e-reader? Since I'll be on vacation next week, I'll include next week's picks also! :-) Low Pressure, by Sandra Brown (Suspense) - I used to read TONS of Sandra Brown in the past, back when she was about the romance. I haven't really gotten a chance to really get into her newer suspense style books. I think I'll start with this one. Everyone needs a little Suspense/Thriller/Romance all wrapped up into one! The Raven Boys, by Maggie Stiefvater (YA Urban Fantasy) - The description alone makes this book worth picking up! Mark of the Witch, by Maggie Shayne (Paranormal Romance) - Oh, this looks really good! Next week's releases: Dearly, Beloved, by Lia Habel (YA Dystopian/Horror) ~ Newly released follow up to Dearly, Departed. Boyfriend from Hell, by Jamie Quaid (Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy) ~ This story description is intriguing! I'm actually reading this now as an egalley, courtesy of the publisher. One Wrong Move, by Shannon McKenna (Paranormal Romance) - Not a fan of the cover art, but I like the description.
So everyone has been talking about the Gangnam Style song, especially the video. What do you think? Will you be doing the Gangnam Style dance in the club or rolling your eyes at those doing it? :-)
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books Release Date: Reprint edition (February 28, 2012) Format: Paperback Pages: 576 Source: Purchase Genre: YA Dystopian, Book to Movie Adaptation Review Date: September 17, 2012 Rating: 5 bookmarks Book Synopsis: In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her. Divergent was a really good read. This story takes place in post-apocalyptic Chicago. The world building was pretty spot on. I felt that the details were consistent and I felt as though I could "see" the surroundings. The city has been structured into five “factions,” intended to cure civilization’s failures. Each faction has a specific set of traits and has their own purpose in society. The one thing I felt was missing, is, what is going on outside of Chicago? Has every major city setup in factions? Not sure what made me wonder that, but I did. I wish it were addressed, even for a sentence or two. Maybe we'll get more history in Insurgent.
In this world at 16 you're an adult. You choose your faction and how you want to live. This is a big ordeal for a young person still growing and learning themselves. That age is a bit young do be forced into making such a life changing decision, but then again, it's part of the story. It's part of what makes this kind of story so appealing. I really enjoyed this book. Of course the cover caught my attention first...but the summary really sealed the deal. I've really been in to PNR and UF genres for a while now, so of course I had to check it out. The synopsis seemed promising and it delivered.
