If you haven't read the book and still want to know what we thought about the show, then you'll still want to listen! Enjoy this series? Join us on Facebook and let's discuss! Read the rest of the trilogy with us now. ![]() You is an American television psychological thriller series based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes. Youpremiered on Lifetime on September 9, 2018. At the end of July, ahead of the series premiere, Lifetime announced that You had been renewed for a second season. After watching the first two episodes, I had to weigh in on this. I read the books (You and Hidden Bodies) and enjoyed them both. In my opinion, Lifetime nailed it. They nailed the plot (thus far) and lots of the characters. If the first two episodes is a true indication of what's in store, I can't wait for more! I know there will be some changes, but one of the best things about a book to TV adaptations is that they have more time to dig into the details of the book to a level that a 2-hour movie never could. The tone of the show is dark, a gritty, and slightly funny in that sarcastic way that I love. The tone was a good representation of the book's tone. I really liked the casting as well. Starting with the most interesting and crazy character, Joe... Joe is Gossip Girl! Okay, not really, but Penn Badgley is most known for playing Dan on the long-running series Gossip Girl on the CW. His character was sort of creepy on Gossip Girl when you think about what he actually did for most of the show's run, and he's super creepy as Joe in You. I guess he's just got a naturally creepy look? You is a story of obsession and murder in a manipulative and low-key way, so you've got to have someone that can hold up that kind of character. He's not your obvious "crazy" guy.
When I read the books a few years ago, I was stunned by what Joe was able to get away with and how Beck was so clueless. I feel that same sentiment while I'm watching the show. The book made lots of women want to deactivate their Facebook. This show will have you double checking that your blinds/curtains are closed and that you actually locked your phone! Even if you haven't read the books, you'll enjoy this show. At first look, it's a solid adaptation, yet it stands on its own. Give it a try. Are you watching You on Lifetime? If you've read the books, how do you think it stacks up so far?
The premier of my new podcast, The Recap! Castle Rock starts this evening. I've been wanted to recap and review episode by episode certain shows for a while now. Lisa and I have been doing it on the Shelf Addiction podcast for The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, but it never really sat well with me that it was on the Shelf Addiction Podcast feed. I felt the show recaps and discussions should have their own space as not to bombard book lovers without interest in TV with that content.
Going forward you may still see Pop Culture Sunday (if I don't end up spinning that off too) on the Shelf Addiction Podcast, but you'll have to follow new feeds for individual TV show series content.
Without further ado, take a listen to The Recap! Castle Rock trailer. I hope you'll join me and Lisa live tonight when we talk about episodes 1 and 2. Join us live on Friday nights during the season at 6pm EST/5pm CST and let's talk all things Castle Rock. Set an alarm! If you're not able to make it, subscribe on Spreaker and listen later on. You'll want to download the Spreaker app (available for Android and iOs) so you can comment on the go! When you subscribe via the app, you'll get broadcast notifications when we go live and you can comment directly from the app! You can also chat with us on Twitter using hashtag #therecaplive during the live broadcast. Mention myself (@shelfaddiction) or Lisa (@LisaOrbanAuthor) when commenting! Talk to you soon!
TV Adaptation
![]() Hey Friends, I watched "Delirium" pilot on Hulu Plus yesterday and I was so utterly disappointed, that I had to let you all know about it. When I first decided to check out Delirium by Lauren Oliver earlier this year, I was unaware that there was a TV show that was already created, picked up and cancelled. Sadly, I understand why FOX dropped this show. WIGS picked it up, but the shows future is unknown. The adaptation features tarring Emma Roberts, Billy Campbell, and several other recognizable actors and actresses. There are some popular names in the cast, but that wasn't enough for me to like it. I've never seen a TV show rush through one book in one episode, very strange. The show loosely followed the book, but there were so many changes, it might as well have been a different story all together. Even when disregarding the book, the story didn't pull me in, the characters didn't pull me.
