The Mountain Between Us is directed by Hany Abu-Assad. Abu-Assad has received two Academy Award nominations: in 2006 for his film Paradise Now, and again in 2013, at the 86th Awards, for his film Omar.  The Mountain Between us is adapted from the book written by Charles Martin. This movie features Idris Alba and Kate Winslet as well some screen time with Beau Bridges and Dermot Mulroney.

Two strangers, a surgeon going home for a important surgery and a photographer on the way to her own wedding crash in a single engine plane and they are left to fight the elements together along with an unnamed dog.  I liked Kate Winslet and Idris Alba on screen together. I believed the friendship then the unlikely romance that developed between them. It's said that when you're in a near death situation with someone a bond forms and that's exactly what we are seeing on screen.

Movie Review |  Hidden Figures

This review is spoiler free, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, no worries, I've got you covered!

Movie Release Date: December 25, 2016 (limited)
Opens nationwide January 6, 2016
MPAA Rating: PG-13 | Drama | 2 hr 7 min
Watch Date: November 22, 2016
Rating: 5/5
Based on the biography Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly.  I haven't read the book yet, but I will. I plan on checking out the audiobook. I've heard great things about it!
Picture
HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world.  The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

My Thoughts

This movie was perfection. I don't say that lightly. I was uplifted and inspired when I walked out of that theater. While watching the movie, I could relate with some of the things happening to Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer). In 2016 women are still being taken advantage of in the work place. From equal pay to getting the correct title and pay for the work they are doing. This really hit home for me in a major way. I've been dealing with this for a white in my recent history so I could relate to her and it angered me.  Once I was able to shake off my anger from those initial scenes, I was enthralled by these women.

What's BTMA? It stands for "book to movie adaptation".

Previously published as Stories of Your Life and Others. The book includes "Story Of Your Life," the basis for the major motion picture Arrival,

I read the short story prior to seeing the movie. I always enjoy experiencing how the story is interpreted by the movie writers and directors.  I really enjoyed the short story, so going into the movie I was excited to see what was in store.

Overall they did take expected liberties and changed some notable things, but even with those changes, it was a strong adaption and maintained the framework of the original story.  Well before I read the short story, I found the movie trailer just amazing. After seeing the movie, I felt that the trailer wasn't a good representation of what the movie delivered. I enjoyed the movie, so it was a small thing, but it still was one of the things that I noted in my first reactions. So just be aware of that.

This is the second installment the Jack Reacher movie franchise and it's based on the 18th book in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. I've read the first book in the series, but I haven't come close to reading the 20+ books in this series. I suspect because there is no correlation between the book order and the movie order, they are choosing the best adaptable book based on plot. Which hopefully means that the books are compartmentalized plot-wise to a certain extent.

With that said, I enjoyed this movie. It was fun, witty, fast paced and in true Tom Cruise style, action packed.

Curious to see what I thought about the book? Click here to read my book review of The Girl on the Train, which also earned a rating of 3/5.

This past weekend I took some time out to view the latest book to movie adaptation, The Girl on the Train. This book was constantly being compared to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I don't think the book, nor the movie was good enough to earn that status.  While it's good, don't be fooled, this is no Gone Girl.

This review is spoiler free, so if you haven't read the book yet, no worries, I've got you covered! I saw this movie two weeks prior to the release date. Unfortunately, I wan't able to post about it until this weekend. I hope you didn't run out to see this movie. Read on to find why.

Did I like the book? YES! The movie? I thought it was decent and enjoyed the film while I was watching it, but sadly it didn't stay with me long after.

Check out my thoughts on the book here. I rated the book 4/5 bookmarks. Unfortunately, the movie didn't score as high.

There were several very notable changes. I didn't feel negative or positive about them, as it was completely expected. All most every book adaptation has received a make over of some type before it hits the big screen, for better or worst.
