Synopsis: Nothing is safe around Kristyl Barnette. Windows break. Books rocket across the room. Lights flicker. Strange occurrences follow the sixteen-year-old everywhere.

When tragedy forces her to move to the small town of Clearwater, Michigan, with her estranged aunt Jodi, Kristyl tries to leave her past behind. But Clearwater has secrets of its own—a mystical history that intersects with Kristyl’s life and might shed light on the inexplicable events that plague her.

When a mysterious illness threatens her aunt’s life, Kristyl will do anything to cure her. Enlisting the help of witches could save Jodi, but is dealing in magic worth the consequences?

Crystal Magic is an urban fantasy tale with elements of magic focusing on witches and psychics. There was even a bit of time travel, which was fun to read.  This title was a fast and entertaining read.

I so rarely get to read books not only written by a Michigan author, but also that take place in Michigan. Freeman earns bonus points for that.  The author also does a great job with character development. I believed the situation that Kristyl finds herself in. I also bought that she's foreign to her abilities and that she grows into learning about her abilities and what she can do.  Along with her, other characters are in a similar situation when it comes to discovering who they are and what they can do.
While it's a cute story and the characters were interesting, I wish there was a bit more surprise to the story, It could have benefited from a substantial plot twist or cliffhanger. Both were lightweight in that regard.  This story is more or less a typical YA story. Teenage angst, family troubles, first love including a good dose of boy problems...and of course there must be a little bit of bullying at school. There is always a bad crew with a bad girl or boy leader. Essentially the plot is loaded with YA tropes. Luckily, the love triangle isn't typical which is a good thing. There's a good reason for the confusion of feelings Kristyl has towards the two boys, but it's not a surprising explanation.

There was a typical time travel consequence twist at the end. Even then, I'm still curious to see where Freeman goes with the story from here. I may continue this series if I happen to catch the Kindle versions on sale. Crystal Magic was a solid jumping off point for this series. I hope that as the series progresses, it will start to evolve into an older feeling YA and that the plot will become more complex with each installment.

If you are looking for a quick and easy read, this is a perfect option.

Happy Reading,
~Tamara
