Synopsis: Colin Hancock is giving his second chance his best shot. With a history of violence and bad decisions behind him and the threat of prison dogging his every step, he's determined to walk a straight line. To Colin, that means applying himself single-mindedly toward his teaching degree and avoiding everything that proved destructive in his earlier life. Reminding himself daily of his hard-earned lessons, the last thing he is looking for is a serious relationship.

Maria Sanchez, the hardworking daughter of Mexican immigrants, is the picture of conventional success. With a degree from Duke Law School and a job at a prestigious firm in Wilmington, she is a dark-haired beauty with a seemingly flawless professional track record. And yet Maria has a traumatic history of her own, one that compelled her to return to her hometown and left her questioning so much of what she once believed.

A chance encounter on a rain-swept road will alter the course of both Colin and Maria's lives, challenging deeply held assumptions about each other and ultimately, themselves. As love unexpectedly takes hold between them, they dare to envision what a future together could possibly look like . . . until menacing reminders of events in Maria's past begin to surface.

As a series of threatening incidents wreaks chaos in Maria's life, Maria and Colin will be tested in increasingly terrifying ways. Will demons from their past destroy the tenuous relationship they've begun to build, or will their love protect them, even in the darkest hour?

Rich in emotion and fueled with suspense, SEE ME reminds us that love is sometimes forged in the crises that threaten to shatter us . . . and that those who see us for who we truly are may not always be the ones easiest to recognize.

I was really honored to help Tamara with this review of the Nicholas Sparks story "See Me." I have been quite a Nicholas Sparks fan since my emotional high school days pouring over "A Walk to Remember". In the last couple years I have lost track I am sad to realize he has 18 novels in total now! I have become quite behind on his books so I jumped in with fresh "eyes".
I say "eyes" because I sampled the abridged audio CD book, which was read by Christopher Ryan Grant, who has narrated quite a variety of all kinds of books. In all of my years of love of reading (+ an English degree to boot), I have never listened to an audio book before (shocker, I'm sure). So now was the perfect time to indulge. I don't know why audio books have never struck my intrigue before but I had a great time & I certainly will be on the lookout for more. I have a short commute to work (13 miles) so I was nervous that would hinder my in-depth listening skills but it was fine. Or that I would get too wrapped up in listening & I wouldn't ever want to get out of my car! But none of that happened. This book is light enough to enjoy on short or long leisurely driving trips (as I did make a 100 mile trip during my listening time). Listening to a book certainly livened up the same ol' routes & also gave me a nice break from the jabbering of radio.
In "See Me", Colin Hancock is beginning to come around & stay on a narrow path after a rough time of rebellion & deep-rooted personal issues. He even begins to work at a bar & take college courses to become a teacher. Driving along late one night, he kindly helps a fellow motorist change her tire in a rainstorm. But as it turns out, their meeting is a lucky happenstance because Colin indirectly knows that driver Maria Sanchez...he is in class with her sister, Serena. Serena has a little fun with this knowledge & begins to intertwine as only a bubbly & match-making sister can do. Colin & Maria break down walls & share stories together how their lives have come to this point back to the beach hometown in North Carolina. In particular, Maria had a rough case in the law firm that she used to work at before. The victim's family never recovered from the crime they had occur & believed the perpetrator was let off the hook too easily.

Just as Maria & Colin are falling into a steady relationship of trust, weird things begin to occur to Maria. Letters. Incidents. Incidents become more scary & more familiar....like the ones hat happened at her old office. Are her demons coming back to haunt her? Does she have someone new fixated on her? Colin's police watchers try to help but they just seem to be 1 step behind, so Colin rares up to take some charge & begins to privately investigate for himself to have peace of mind & justice.

This story keeps you guessing what will happen next & who is behind it. & When you think you know, maybe that is not the case after all. Love blooms & family circles around. Another thing I enjoy about Nicholas Sparks works is the way he subtly uses words of the title in the writing, so be on the lookout for "See Me" surfacing to the top. It's like a word treasure hunt.
