Synopsis: Seven years ago, my world ended.
Seven years later, my new life began.
It's been seven years since Lexi Knight lost her brother in a tragic accident. On the anniversary of his death, her brother's best friend shows up unexpectedly - a man she hasn't seen since the funeral. He is no longer the boy Lexi once knew, but a dangerous-looking man with tattoos and dark secrets. He broke her trust and abandoned her family, yet what he reveals makes it impossible to stay angry. Lexi has been secretly infatuated with Austin since childhood, so finding out he's a Shifter just makes him sexier. Dammit.
Austin Cole has returned to the city where he grew up, and just in time. He's lived a hard life these past seven years, and the shadows of his past are threatening to destroy Lexi's family. It's time that she learned the truth about her brother, but there is a shocking twist that Austin never saw coming. Now he must protect her family when her mother and sister wind up in mortal danger. Will Lexi learn to accept the truth about who he is, and can Austin salvage a relationship from the ruins of their past?
Destiny will find you.
Austin's character is also well balanced. He's the guy that Lexi has had a crush on since childhood, her deceased brother's best friend. Of course he's got a secret and it's a doozy. Que all the mysterious man qualities. Brooding, strong yet not overbearing, a charismatic personality, and of course a body to write home about. He's even a tad insecure when it comes to Lexi. He likes her, but dare he actually express that he likes her? Of course!
I was thoroughly enjoying myself during this audiobook. Shapeshifters (not werewolves in this case) are one of my favorite type of creatures. The Shapeshifters in this story have the wolf pack mentality, which can be a bit much at times, but Dark was able to keep the story true to those themes yet not be over the top. Love triangle anyone? As expected there appears to be a love triangle. One thing that I enjoy most is when there is a clear decision, not a cop out. Lexie didn't really have a choice once she found out more about her family history. That's all I'm going to say on that topic!
The plot was fast pasted and kept me fully engaged. The heat level was a strong seven, which is always fun. No doubt this is an adult read, but won't have you totally embarrased if you don't have headphones in. While a few things were a tad formula driven and predictable, there were enough things that were different that kept things interesting despite the paranormal romance "formula'".
This was my first time hearing Nicole Poole's narration. She did a great job with the men and women voices. She delivered a southern accent that seems settle and believable. Her voice is easy to listen to and it fit well with these characters. Poole told the listeners a story, she didn't read it. I hope to hear here on future audiobooks in this series.
This was a fun and quick audiobook. It was right in my comfort zone and I've missed books like this. I'll be listening to the remaining books in this series on audio as well. I look forward to seeing how the books in the series start to entwine themselves. In true paranormal style, I'm pretty sure each book will focus on it's own couple, but I hope to see Austin and Lexi again in installments to come. Have you read or listened to Seven Years, or the other books in the series? If so, tell me what you thought of them!
Happy Listening,
~Tamara
