Synopsis:  Zadie Anson and Emma Colley have been best friends since their early twenties, when they first began navigating serious romantic relationships amid the intensity of medical school. Now they're happily married wives and mothers with successful careers--Zadie as a pediatric cardiologist and Emma as a trauma surgeon. Their lives in Charlotte, North Carolina are chaotic but fulfilling, until the return of a former colleague unearths a secret one of them has been harboring for years.

As chief resident, Nick Xenokostas was the center of Zadie's life--both professionally and personally--throughout a tragic chain of events in her third year of medical school that she has long since put behind her. Nick's unexpected reappearance during a time of new professional crisis shocks both women into a deeper look at the difficult choices they made at the beginning of their careers. As it becomes evident that Emma must have known more than she revealed about circumstances that nearly derailed both their lives, Zadie starts to question everything she thought she knew about her closest friend.

I love Grey’s Anatomy and I adore Big Little Lies, I enjoyed them both immensely. When I heard that this book has the vibe of both of those put together, I was all about it!  Pair that with the stunning cover (I’m a sucker for pretty cover art) and I was super excited to read The Queen of Hearts.

Kimmery Martin delivers a beautifully written book about friendship, motherhood, secrets, and medicine.  I found this book hard to put down.  Her writing style is concise, yet it’s easy to read and had a warmth to it.  At first I was concerned that things could get too technical with all the medicine because Martin is a doctor, but I had nothing to worry about. The parts that described medical procedures and surgiers were well done and digestible.
This story alternates between Zadie and Emma’s point of view. It also goes back to 1999 and present day.  With both of those plot lines going on in two different points in time, Martin did a stellar job keeping the plot clean and readable.  The huge cast of characters and how they all weave together in a seamless way is notable.

Zadie a pediatric cardiology doctor and Emma a trauma surgeon are both strong women with families and they are best friends. Emma's is all about her head and Zadie is all about her heart and feelings.  Emma and Zadie contrast well and fit together like a yin and yang.  First friends that met at a high school summer camp, then they grew into best friends as they went to college and medical school together.  The relationship between them and the banter that they engage in is so “Christina Yang/Meredith Grey”. They know each other so well, yet they have a very deep secret between them.  This secret happened during their third year of medical school and since has been dead and buried. It’s back though…and they have to deal with it now as doctor from their time as interns joins the staff of the hospital they both work at.

This book did remind me of Grey’s Anatomy. Especially the parts of the story that were back in 1999 when a group of young eager interns work with more experienced residents and attending doctors. I really enjoyed their group of friends. Those parts were just fun to read. While Zadie’s interactions with Dr.X , were young and naive, I could see the writing on the wall.

I appreciate how the story unfolded bit by bit. I keep wanting to find out what happened! What did Emma keep from Zadie?  What does Zadie feel so much guilt about?  Slowly these things were exposed at a pace that was enjoyable. It kept me turning the pages with a reckless abandon. I found myself laughing out loud here and there, which is always refreshing.  Zadie, her kids, and her nonexistent husband have a very interesting dynamic. I do really love her youngest child’s demeanor and speech patterns, she super cute when she isn’t being a little terror. Emma has an interesting marriage as well, and I buy it, she and her husband were totally believable and relatable.

If you really love shows like Grey’s Anatomy and even ER, this would be a perfect fit for you. This would also be a great book club read that will generate good conversation.  I look forward to reading more by Kimmery Martin.
