This review is spoiler free, so if you haven't read the book yet, no worries, I've got you covered! I saw this movie two weeks prior to the release date. Unfortunately, I wan't able to post about it until this weekend. I hope you didn't run out to see this movie. Read on to find why.
Did I like the book? YES! The movie? I thought it was decent and enjoyed the film while I was watching it, but sadly it didn't stay with me long after. Check out my thoughts on the book here. I rated the book 4/5 bookmarks. Unfortunately, the movie didn't score as high. There were several very notable changes. I didn't feel negative or positive about them, as it was completely expected. All most every book adaptation has received a make over of some type before it hits the big screen, for better or worst. |
Let me tell you what I liked about this movie. The cinematography was just awesome. I was able to see this in 3D and I think that it made it even more interesting visually. In Tim Burton style, it was whimsical and a little dark. The fact that it was beautiful to look at added to the value of the movie. Speaking of dark, I felt that some of the scenes came off much more scary on film than they did on paper. In full disclosure, it has been 4-5 years since I've read the book, so of course there were some scenes that I questioned if they were even in the book at all. | |
If you just LOVED the book, then definitely see the movie. Go into it knowing things are not the same as the book, so adjust your expectations. If you can put the book details out of your mind and take the movie for what it is, you'll enjoy it more. If you adore Tim Burton movies, I would recommend checking out this film as well. It's matinee worthy for sure. I recommend this for adults and kids who are 13+, maybe a little younger if they are mature and don't scare easily.
Do I think that book two, Hollow City, will make it to the big screen? I'm not sure, it depends on how this movie performs in the box office.
