This movie was everything that you'd want in a war time romance. Yes, I said romance. This movie was served up to us as a drama and a spy movie in the trailers. Possibly an action movie, but I disagree with that assessment a bit. Yes, there are a good amount of scenes where they are clearly spies. Explosions and guns, lots of action. But with that said, this movie is more about the relationship between the characters played by Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard.
During World War II, intelligence officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) is stationed in Casablanca, Morocco (North Africa) where he meets French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard). They are assigned an assignment as husband and wife...they fall in love...and they get married for real. As I mentioned at the top of this post, this is spoiler free, so if you watch the movie trailer, you will see this is what's already revealed.
The first half of the film is geared toward their relationship development so that we feel vested when the ax of bad news is dropped on Max Vatan (Pitt). Is his wife a spy? Is she not? You'll have to watch the film to find out, but regardless, I felt swept away by the vastness and yet tightly woven plot of this movie. Beautiful 40's costumes, cars, guns, etc. The movie was visually appealing and I was entertained for the full two hours. Nothing is lost, every scene was usefully to the story.
Marion Cotillard killed it in this role, she never disappoints. Pitt did a good job as well. While the movie isn't perfect, it's a solid film. The acting is strong and the plot is engaging. This is definitely a good movie and worth seeing. Take a break from the Thanksgiving and Black Friday rush, head over to your local theater and spend a few hours watching Allied.
