Grace and Sam, two young people in love with impossible odds against them ever being together. I enjoyed listening to this book. At first, I must admit the readers voice of Sam threw me. I guess that's why I don't listen to the audio versions often. It changes how I would hear the characters in my head when I read it. After a while I got used to his voice and I was able to get into the story.
This was the first book that I read about werewolves changing based on the temperature outside. Usually it's the full moon, this was different. In this book, cold = wolf, warm = human until eventually they are no longer able to turn back into their human forms. The pack mentality is strong and so is the despair that Sam feels. He is lonely and brooding. Grace is naive and lonely. They both seem consumed with each other from the time Grace was “attacked” by Sam's pack when she was a child. Since she was bitten, Grace has been obsessed with the wolves and Sam with her.
The other characters in the book are almost muted. What I mean by that is, the other characters are all secondary. Necessary for the story to develop, but unfortunately they are forgettable. To the point where I don’t really recall their names! Terrible, I know.
This book is perfect for YA readers. Teenage angst, check. First love, check. Basically, the perfect formula for young adult readers. Yet the story was interesting enough for adult readers to also enjoy. On the downside, if you are looking for some action and excitement from the wolf pack, basically, there is none. There are no fight scenes, no running from the bad guy, etc.
I’ll be listening to the 2nd installment of this series very soon and I’m hoping for a more action with the wolves and growth between Sam and Grace as I assume they will be a little older. I am also hoping to get more from the secondary characters and to get more than one storyline going on at once.
