After watching the first two episodes, I had to weigh in on this. I read the books (You and Hidden Bodies) and enjoyed them both. In my opinion, Lifetime nailed it. They nailed the plot (thus far) and lots of the characters. If the first two episodes is a true indication of what's in store, I can't wait for more! I know there will be some changes, but one of the best things about a book to TV adaptations is that they have more time to dig into the details of the book to a level that a 2-hour movie never could.
The tone of the show is dark, a gritty, and slightly funny in that sarcastic way that I love. The tone was a good representation of the book's tone. I really liked the casting as well. Starting with the most interesting and crazy character, Joe... Joe is Gossip Girl! Okay, not really, but Penn Badgley is most known for playing Dan on the long-running series Gossip Girl on the CW. His character was sort of creepy on Gossip Girl when you think about what he actually did for most of the show's run, and he's super creepy as Joe in You. I guess he's just got a naturally creepy look? You is a story of obsession and murder in a manipulative and low-key way, so you've got to have someone that can hold up that kind of character. He's not your obvious "crazy" guy.
When it comes to Beck, Elizabeth Lail is a great fit. I believe her naïveté and her need to fit in and her want to be in a relationship. As for Beck's friends, while not physical match for Peach, I really love Shay Mitchell in that role. After years on Pretty Little Liars, it's wonderful to see her in a new role that is going to be very complex when it's all said and done. | |
Even if you haven't read the books, you'll enjoy this show. At first look, it's a solid adaptation, yet it stands on its own. Give it a try. Are you watching You on Lifetime? If you've read the books, how do you think it stacks up so far?
