DETROIT'S BIGGEST USED BOOK & MEDIA SALE:
MAY 15-22, 2016
LAUREL PARK PLACE • LIVONIA, MI

There is an awesome local Michigan community service project, called Bookstock. It's an opportunity to purchase used books and media at a very low price. Bookstock begins this Sunday with a pre-sale event that cost $20. The $20 allows you to gain early access to the sale before the crowds. The pre-sale is from 8:15 am-11:00 am! The general admission beginning at 11am is free for all, You don't want to miss this annual event, and it's all for charity!

Bookstock is an chance for you to support local education and literacy programs in the Metro Detroit area. Personally, I always jump at the chance to do so. I believe in the importance of literacy for children and adults. Spending some money filling out my library is a fun and easy way to show your support.
In addition to the sale, Bookstock features an wonderful opportunity for local fourth grade kids called the B.E.S.T. AWARDS. The kids are given a topic to write about and they submit their essays to the contest. They have the opportunity to win gift cards for themselves, their teacher, and their school! That's just amazing! The school and the teacher connected to the winners will get some money to use in the school.

Curious about how the proceeds from the Bookstock sale are used? Check out the Bookstock Fund page to find out how the money is used within the community!

I know lots of book nerds that are looking to get their series collections completed, same as me. Get out there, support literacy and...buy more books! It should be noted that I found lots of brand new hardcover books (seriously - they don't even look like they were opened once) for $3-$4!

World Book Night 2013 | Recap!

I apologize for it taking so long to post this. It's just been so busy lately.  My first WBN was so much fun! I was happy to do it and I hope I get the opportunity to do it for years to come. Another Giver, that I just met by the way, and I went together and it was a good time. We went to a popular Downtown shopping area and walked around and spent some time in front if the Starbucks!

I gave out Playing For Pizza, by John Grisham. It was fun to get out of my comfort zone and talk to complete strangers on the street.  It shocked me to hear so many people say "I don't have time to read". Which I found pretty unfortunate.  Initially, I felt that people thought there was a catch, like we wanted money or that were handing out religious stuff because many people basically ran by us without even making eye contact!

I learned quickly that I had to be a fast talker and yell out "Free John Grisham book!" That usually got their attention, then I was able to talk a bit about World Book Night and have a short conversation with them. I'm glad that I had a popular author, because the girl with me had the John Green book, and that tactic didn't work as well for her. We soon figured out that light or non-readers hadn't heard of John Green. I wore the WBN Giver sticker on my sweater, but next year I'll make an eye catching poster board also. I think that would help draw attention and help people be less suspicious.

Did you participate in WBN? If so, what was your experience?

Happy Reading,
~ Tamara

Book Haul Tuesday

"Book Haul Tuesday” is my weekly post where I take a peek at the newly released fiction books of the week and post the books which I’ve added to my forever growing “To Be Read” list.  I hope to introduce you to some interesting books and talented authors that you haven't read yet.  Hopefully I'll motivate you to run out and pick up a new release or two for your shelf or reader!

In addition to my book recommendation(s), of course, I'll show off any books I've hauled in the last week.  My book haul is all about sharing the books I've added to my lovely shelves, which can be physical or virtual.

What's in my book haul?
  • Books I've  purchase either in a store or online.
  • ebooks I've purchase online.
  • Books, ebooks and audiobooks I've borrow from my local library (hard copies and downloadable content)
  • ARCs and review books (hard copies, ebooks and galleys).
  • Books, ebooks and audio books that I've acquired through giveaways and as gifts.

I had a HUGE haul this past week. All books that I've purchased.  On this past Sunday, I went to a used book sale charity event that supports literacy, called Bookstock.  I found some good books,of which I plan on giving one or two of them away to people I know. The rest are mines! 11 books in great condition for $30! Not bad at all!  I searched for about an hour and a half, but the husband was getting antsy, so I had to wrap it up. The event is held in a small mall in Livonia, MI.  ALL the halls were filled with tables upon tables of book, organized by subject.  There were soooooo many books, I could have looked for hours and hours on end. It was crazy with so many people.  They do this every year, so I'll be back next year!  It's still going on now until the 28th, so if you live in the area, you may want to check it out.

I didn't notice any new releases this week. I'm sure there are some worth mentioning, but I've been a bit distracted so I hadn't really searched for any that I'd want. Now on to the haul!

What did you haul this week?

Happy Reading,
~Tamara

Book haul!

  • The Shack, by Wm. Paul Young - I listened to this on audio. I really liked it. So of course, I had to have it on my shelf so I can read it next time.
  • The Time Travelers Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger - I loved this movie and have heard great things about the book, so I'll be reading this.
  • The Kite Runner, by  Khaled Hosseini - I read this and enjoyed it a lot. It was a library borrow when I read it, but I think this would be a nice addition to my shelf.
  • A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini  - I haven't read it, but I'd heard good things. Since I liked the Kite Runner, I thought to give this a try.
  • One Fifth Avenue, by Candace Bushnell - I don't read much Chick Lit, but I did adore Sex in the City and Lipstick Jungle. So I'll give one a go.
  • A Walk to Remember, by Nicholas Sparks - Loved this movie. We all know the books are always better, so I had to get this.
  • The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks - This is my all time favorite romance movie. So again, I know the book will be amazing!
  • The Vampire Armand, by Anne Rice - I haven't read Anne Rice in a while and the cover art intrigued me. I didn't know at the time this was book 6 in a series...so  I'll probably give it away. For some reason I thought it was stand alone. Oh well.
  • Dark Lover, by J.R. Ward - I love the BDB series. I picked this up to give to a friend who I want to get addicted to the series also! Lol.
  • Bitter, by Kelly Armstrong -  Book 1 of the Women of the Otherworld series, This has been on my TBR list for a long time.
  • Stolen, by Kelly Armstrong - Book 2 in the Women of the Otherworld series. It made sense to grab it also!

World Book Night 2013 | Box Pick uP!

This past Tuesday night I picked up my box of books for WBN, which is on Tuesday, April 23rd! I'm excited about getting out there and talking to people and convincing them to read Playing for Pizza. I'm going to sit down and read it this weekend. It's less than 300 pages, so I think I can get through it quickly.

There were 18 Givers that picked up from the location same as me. It was interesting to talk to others and hear where they plan on giving out books and how they came to know about World Book night. Teachers, Librarians, Youth Literacy program personnel, all kind of people. It was so inspiring to see so many dedicated to literacy.

I connected with other woman in my city and we'll be passing out books out together. Maybe next year, I can convince my book club ladies to participate! :-)

If you don't know what WBN is, check it out here! It's a great program and this is their 2nd year. I hope to participate for many years to come.

I'm looking forward to it!  I'll also be doing a blog post summarizing my evening of book giving, so if you'd like to know my night went, do check back for that post. :-)

Are you a Giver this year?

Happy Reading!
~Tamara
